The honest exercise is an inventory: list every script currently loading, name who asked for it, name what it is for, and name who would notice if it stopped.
That last question is the useful one, because a surprising share of them have no answer — the campaign ended, the person left, the tool was replaced and the tag stayed. Each script costs page weight, adds a dependency on somebody else's availability, and has whatever access to the page it was granted, which for most tags is a great deal. Removing the unused ones is free performance and a reduced surface, which is a rare combination. For the ones that stay, two practices help: loading them so that a slow or failing third party cannot hold up your own page, and reviewing the list on a schedule rather than when somebody notices the site is slow. What belongs to your adviser rather than to us is what each script is permitted to collect, and that conversation is considerably easier once the list exists.

How do we decide what to remove?
Ask who would notice if it stopped. A script with no answer to that has no owner, and a surprising number of them have none — the campaign finished, the person left, or the tool was replaced and the tag was never taken out. Those come off immediately.
What does each script actually cost?
Page weight, a dependency on somebody else's uptime, and whatever access to the page it was given, which for most tags is broad. The performance cost is the visible one and usually the smallest of the three when anybody looks properly.
Should this be reviewed regularly?
Yes, on a schedule rather than when somebody complains that the site is slow. Scripts accumulate continuously and nothing ever prompts their removal, so without a standing review the list only ever grows and the clean-up is always a bigger job than it needed to be.
