Catching the price that was typed with one zero missing
Price errors are ordinary human ones: a missing digit, a decimal in the wrong place, a percentage applied twice, a bulk update that matched more products than intended.
What makes them expensive is that a wrong price is more attractive than a right one, so it converts immediately and at volume. The check is simple and needs no cleverness: compare every price change against the previous price and against cost, and hold anything that moves by more than a threshold or falls below margin for confirmation. The same check catches the bulk update that hit four thousand products instead of forty, which is the version that actually hurts. Two refinements matter in practice. The hold has to be quick to clear, or somebody running a genuine promotion will find a way around it and the guardrail becomes theatre. And there should be a second check at the point of sale, because a price can also become wrong through a currency rule or a discount stacking in a way nobody tested.

What should trigger a hold?
A change larger than a set proportion of the previous price, anything falling below cost, and any bulk update touching more products than expected. Those three catch nearly every real incident, and none of them requires knowing anything clever about what the price should have been.
Will this get in the way of promotions?
Only if clearing a hold is slow. A guardrail that takes ten minutes to override will be worked around by whoever is launching a sale under pressure, and then it protects nothing. Quick confirmation by somebody authorised is what keeps it in use rather than in the way.
Is one check enough?
No. Prices can also become wrong on the way to the customer, through a currency rule or two discounts stacking in a combination nobody tested. A second check at the point of sale catches the cases where every individual price was correct and the total was not.
