Recording every reported error against the product, the location and the time turns a stream of individual apologies into a short list of causes, most of which are fixed by moving something or relabelling it rather than by asking people to concentrate harder. Automation adds a check at the packing bench — scanning what is actually in the box against what the order says — which catches the error while it is still free to fix. The honest limitation is that this only works if it is faster than not doing it. A check that adds thirty seconds to every parcel will be skipped during the busy period, which is precisely when mistakes are made, so the measure of a good implementation is whether anybody bypasses it in December.

What does recording errors actually give you?
