Ecommerce website development for Italian businesses

Ecommerce development for Italian businesses runs into an obligation no other large European market has in the same form: invoices are exchanged through a national electronic system rather than sent directly. That makes invoicing infrastructure rather than correspondence. We build remotely from Rajkot and hold no Italian office.

How do you work with Italian clients?

We hold no Italian office.

Work is delivered from our studio in Rajkot on a shared board you can open at any time, with every decision written down the day it is made and scope changes priced in writing before they are built. What is specific to Italy is that invoicing is routed through a national exchange system, which makes it a piece of infrastructure the store connects to rather than a document the store produces. In practice that means a store hands complete, correctly structured order data to accredited software, and the integration between the two is scoped, built and tested as its own line of work rather than assumed. The second Italian specific is payment behaviour: cash on delivery remains ordinary in parts of the market, and it changes the order lifecycle in exactly the way it does in Czechia and Romania — money arriving after despatch, reconciliation through the carrier, and an uncollected parcel as a cost rather than a refund. Both belong in the first phase. Invoicing is in euro. Contracts are governed by the laws of India, stated plainly in our terms and worth raising with your adviser before signing.

What we build

Four services, delivered the same way wherever you are: Shopify stores, WooCommerce stores, the interface design that decides whether either converts, and the automation that removes manual work from running them.

Which platforms dominate in Italy?

Our observation, not sourced data

What we see in the Italian market, stated as our observation rather than as sourced data: WooCommerce and PrestaShop both hold a substantial installed base, with Shopify growing among newer direct-to-consumer brands. We build on Shopify and WooCommerce. The pattern worth naming is that the electronic invoicing integration is the piece most often underestimated in a quote, and a project that treats it as a plugin rather than an integration is the one that runs late.

What does a Italian store actually have to handle?

Every layer below is something a store selling in Italy has to get right, and most of them are decided before a line of code is written. Thresholds and rates are deliberately not quoted here — they change, and the primary sources are linked further down.

What a store selling in Italy typically needs at each layer.
LayerWhat Italian stores usually need
CurrencyEuro, with prices shown inclusive of VAT to consumers
Payment methodsCards and PayPal, with cash on delivery still ordinary in places
InvoicingInvoices are exchanged through a national electronic system rather than sent directly
Shipping carriersPoste Italiane, BRT, GLS, SDA; pickup points are common
Cash on deliveryChanges reconciliation and makes an uncollected parcel a cost rather than a refund
Tax handlingItalian VAT, with one-stop-shop reporting for EU distance sales
Data protectionGDPR and the national code, supervised by the Garante
Consumer rightsA fourteen-day withdrawal right on most distance sales

Cities we cover in Italy

Each city page describes what commerce actually looks like there rather than repeating this one. If your city is not listed, the service is identical — we simply have not written a page worth publishing about it yet.

Data and consumer rules

Primary sources

An Italian store carries the two standard EU regimes plus an invoicing obligation that shapes its architecture. Data protection runs through GDPR and the national privacy code, supervised by the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali, which has been specific about cookie consent in ways worth checking against your banner. Consumer law gives a fourteen-day withdrawal right on most distance sales, stated before purchase. The invoicing obligation is structural: invoices are exchanged through a national electronic system, which means required formats, required routing and reportable corrections rather than a PDF attached to an email. A refund is therefore a reportable event rather than an internal adjustment. We build so the store produces clean order data for accredited software rather than pretending to be it. Which obligations apply to your business is a question for your accountant, and nothing here is tax or legal advice.

Nothing on this page is legal or tax advice.

Where Italian businesses sell next

These are the markets clients in Italy most often ask about once the first store is trading. Each has its own payment habits, carriers and regulator, and a store built for one does not automatically work in the next. Every other market we cover is listed underneath.

Italian questions we are asked

5 questions specific to working with us from Italy, including the one most agencies avoid: whether anybody at this studio is actually in the country.

Do you have an Italian office?

No. We work from Rajkot, India, and this page says so rather than implying a Milan address. You get a named contact who stays with the account, a shared board you can open at any time, and replies within one business day. If somebody physically present is a requirement, we do not meet it.

How does electronic invoicing affect the build?

It makes invoicing an integration rather than a feature. The store produces complete order data and accredited software handles the exchange, which is a scoped piece of work with its own testing. Projects that treat it as a plugin discover late that the data model does not carry what the format requires.

Should we still offer cash on delivery?

If your customers expect it, yes, and price it honestly. It converts buyers who will not pay in advance, and it costs you uncollected parcels and slower cash. A small fee is common and reduces the abandonment rate on parcels nobody collects, which is the expensive failure here.

What happens to an electronic invoice when we refund?

It becomes a reportable correction rather than a private adjustment, which is why refunds have to flow through the same integration as the original. Stores that treat a refund purely as a payment reversal end up with exchanged invoices that no longer describe what happened.

Do we need Italian content or will English do?

Italian, for an Italian audience. English stores sell here to a narrower group, and translated product copy reads as translated. We build the structure to carry Italian properly, including URLs and metadata rather than only visible text, and the words come from you or a translator you trust.
